Before the War
Richard Winters began training for the military in August of 1941. He trained at Camp Croft in South Carolina. After finishing his own training he stayed to help others.
In 1942 Winters was selected to go to the Officer Candidate School. While training and helping to train others Winters decided he wanted to be a part of the parachute infantry. After waiting 5 weeks for an open position he was called to join the 506th Parachute infantry regiment at Camp Toccoa in Georgia. Due to Pearl Harbor in 1941 there was a surge in the amounts of men enlisting into the military and army forces. Seeing the country suffer motivated many young men to serve and help. Camp Toccoa became full and constantly ran out of slots. This was a good thing for the country because there were more soldiers everyday but all the camps became full. |
